Urban Planning Response in Mumbai During the COVID-19 Lockdown: A Citizen’s Charter, 2020
As the COVID-19 lockdown began in Mumbai, access to basic rights to millions of citizens was seriously curtailed - including access to drinking water, sanitation, food, shelter, health, and employment. In this scenario, CPD worked with a coalition of civil society organisations to deliberate on a city-wide response to these concerns. The recommendations of this deliberation were shared with the Maharashtra state government as well as the Bombay High Court via this report.
Malad Wall Collapse: A State Induced Disaster, 2019
In 2019, a security wall built by the Municipality to protect a water reservoir in Malad, Mumbai, collapsed due to heavy rainfall and water logging. 31 people lost their lives, and 115 families were left unsheltered as their homes were washed away. CPD joined a fact-finding team of civil society experts to investigate the reasons behind this disaster, and the losses caused by it.
Moving Towards Universal Water & Sanitation Access, 2020
During the COVID-19 induced lockdown, the CPD team conducted a survey in Mumbai's most vulnerable informal settlements to assess the impact of the lockdown on access to water and sanitation. Results and recommendations of this report were presented to the municipality and media, and led to year-long policy deliberations with the Municipal Corporation culminating in the revised Water for All policy in 2022.
